I have the exciting opportunity to bring you all this forum topic, which have been requested by the Jury themselves. Here you may ask any question you might have to the Jury. The Jury will answer all your questions in due time, but as they are busy with their lives, I must ask of you to be patient if a reply doesn’t come hastily. For now, fire away and let your common sense guide you. If necessary, I will update this post with guidelines.

I bet this is covered somewere in the rules, but wont hurt to ask:
How long time do the jury have to play each game?
For 2009 I think it was 5 minutes, but I may have changed.

Ye. The same question was asked on the recent workshop and they stated it’s somewhere around 5-10 minutes. So making 10 awesome new levels or a 7 hour gameplay title is out of the question. ;)

Really, that short of a time?
If a game has local multiplayer (in my case, up to four players in splitscreen), will they use that?

Ronald Pompa Ronald Pompa 15 posts

Depends on how quick and easy it is to get into the game. That’s a challenge. To get the game going in 5 mins…
I don’t see why they won’t use 4 player multi-screen if that’s what the game is all about. Be sure to include/mention if there is additional hardware used for game-play, such as gamepads, “guitar hero”-guitars etc..

The sga crew will go through each game before the jury plays it so we can ease them more quickly into the game, they wont start out having to figure out how to navigate the menus etc.
However, experienceing the game is still up to them, I suggest a special level/version for the jury that tries to show of the game in minimum time.
Anton: Yes, if the game was intended for multiplayer it will be played multiplayer.

Hi, do we have to make a game in DX9? Isn’t DX10 becoming more of a standard?

Ronald Pompa Ronald Pompa 15 posts

Well, it all depends on what the judges use for hardware. This is nothing official but most graphics cards 3 years back support dx10 so hardware wise, it shouldn’t be a problem. The only problem might be that they choose to use Windows XP, which was actually used last year.

From 2009 competition info:

“The Categories for Swedish Game Awards 2008 have been changed to reflect changes in both technologies and the industry. We have now put the focus on the game, instead of on the platform. When you design a game, it doesnt matter what target platform you have intended for it, as long as the prototype runs on either Windows XP, OSX (as a Universal binary) or Linux (latest stable build of Ubuntu). We also support emulators and so called “mods”, modifications of existing games, such as Half-Life 2 or Unreal Tournament.

Hopefully because Win 7 has reached a much larger market than Vista, we’ll probably see that as the Win OS on the machines.

But again, this is just a speculation and nothing that’s been confirmed by the official SGA team.
