Description
Ether is a puzzle game that makes use of the already implemented physics, but lets the player interact with them in a completely new way. Taking place in a world were gravity has shaped everything from animals to houses, and from weather to communication devices, the player is faced with different obstacles on her way through the game. To progress, the player has the ability to change the gravitational state of nearly every loose object in the environment using a stick. This stick can turn objects weightless, freeze them mid-air or have them fall back on the ground. Hoping to bring a brand new experience with the game play we have no intentions of leaving the visuals unaltered. The Source Engine is deeply modified to provide a vision of something new, a world that feels alive and different from what you have seen before. I really like the whole idea of giving the player alot of freedom in solving puzzles and with this game, you can do alot.
Just played through the demo so here's some feedback:
Jumping between stepstones seems to be key in this game. Now I don't generally mind precision jumping now and then, but having the half-life2 accelerated jump really takes some fun out of it. First thing is: The jumping needs to be tweaked abit. It is highly frustrating lacking the power to affect your jumps. The HL2 jump differs so greatly in "upwards jump + forward motion" and "forward jump" that you will quite likely miss your target, especially with these kind of small stepping stones you are using. Second thing, related to first: The game is based on consecutively building stones like a stair or a bridge over a gap. This means that the player quite often will jump up stepping stones holding another stone. With the HL2 physics engine, if you collide too much with something, you drop your object. The way the players solve this is by looking in other directions while jumping to not have the object they are holding bump into something. Can you see a problem with forcing the players to look straight up/to the side in a game highly based on precision jumping on small stepstones? Other than those two things the game felt really good. I only had some issues with stones not appearing on the correct places after loading a saved game. I'm looking forward to a longer version of the game.
