Description

Haven & Hearth is a folkeloreish MMORPG focused on life simulation and strategy. We're not in the competition for SGA '08 since Haven isn't even complete enough to merit being called a game yet. We will however, for kicks and giggles, keep on posting screenshots and whatnot. Best of luck to all of you who're still in the race! This entry has been renamed "old", since we (apparently) had to recreate the game for SGA '09.

Re: Graphics engine

I suspected as much. =) My own experience of Java2D is that it's very limited. Our own game Jarl, uses LWJGL which includes another port of OpenGL. For future projects I can wholeheartedly recommend Slick, which is based on LWJGL but has a very Java2D-like API. It has the simplicity of Java2D but none of the performance drawbacks.

Re: Graphics engine

It is funny that you should ask, because we initially intended to write the game in pure Java2D (and did up until quite recently). Unfortunately, it turned out that Java2D, while normally quite acceptable, sucks very badly when it comes to anything alpha transparent (at one point, we tried adding 4 sprites or so that were around 100x100 pixels, intended as shadows, and watched our framerate drop to 10% of normal).

Since then, we have transitioned over the JOGL (the Java port of OpenGL) instead, which has no problems whatsoever with alpha transparency, and does some other nifty tricks as well. It was with JOGL that we were able to add the day/night cycle effects.

Graphics engine

Just out of curiosity, what is the graphics engine based on? Is it pure Java2D?

I really like the looks of the game =) reminds me of the good old days.

RE: Stuff

We'll stop adding stuff when the game is done, when else? Steve understands us. :)
